Tip # 1. Educate yourself and always have your Owner's Manual available. The best defense you have against a "break down" is education. Familiarize yourself with at home preventative maintenance; learn how to check your vehicles oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid. By checking these regularly you can prevent serious damage to your vehicles inner workings. Your Owner's Manual will explain how to check the fluids, when and what fluids to change and other maintenance schedules.

Tip # 2. Regularly check the level and condition of your transmission fluid. It is important to refer to your vehicles Owner's Manual to determine what level is acceptable and how to check the fluid.For instance, different transmissions require different steps to get an accurate check of the level; some must have the engine running and be in neutral, some must have the engine running and be in park and yet their are others that require the engine to not be running, etc.. Once you remove the dipstick, the fluid should be transparent and red without any unpleasant odor. If you find that the color is cloudy, brown and accompanied by a burnt smell then you will need to have your transmission checked as soon as possible. If you find the fluid is in good condition but low, you may add only the transmission fluid that is recommended by your vehicles manufacturer. Using the wrong transmission fluid can damage your transmission.

Tip # 3. Be aware of possible leaks, always check the ground area under your vehicle for any red or reddish brown fluid. This is an indication of a leak. Check your fluid and insure that you have an acceptable level to drive your vehicle to one of our locations for inspection. To lessen further damage to your transmission bring it in at first sign of a problem.

Tip # 4. Do not use overdrive while towing heavy loads or driving in mountainous terrains.

Tip # 5. If your vehicle is being towed, check Owner's Manual for steps you must take before being towed. In some vehicles if the drive shaft is not disconnected the transmission will move yet because the vehicle is not running the fluid does not circulate. The fluid cools and provides lubrication to the metal parts of the transmission. Without the fluid the transmission will become extremely hot and eventually melt.

Tip # 6. You will need to have your vehicle checked immediately If: You notice your vehicle jerks or shudders while changing gears or there are changes in the way that it is shifting, vehicle is overheating, standard shifting becomes noisy and hard, your car will not move in one or more gears including reverse, you have found a leak or if the color of your transmission fluid is reddish brown.

Tip # 8. The transmission fluid endures heat, friction and electrochemical reactions which causes the fluid to degrade over time. It is important to have preventative maintenance done approximately every 30,000 miles unless your are regularly towing heavy loads, in this case every 15,000 miles is recommended.
